Home-Start Dover District received some good news earlier this year when the charity was awarded a Big Lottery Fund grant of £337,000 to deliver a new project, Embrace, which supports families with disabled children. The Dover-based charity recruits and trains local people as volunteers who go on to provide support which enables local families to give their children the best start in life.
Soon after they were awarded the grant, Home-Start Dover District commissioned me to complete an Organisational Strengths Review of the charity to help trustees identify the charity’s strengths, areas for improvement, opportunities and gaps in local services. We’ve completed a number of these reviews for a range of charities, but we’ve developed a specific model for Home-Start which works well.
With a new three-year Big Lottery Fund project to deliver, it seems a sensible time for the charity to draw breath and take stock of what it’s achieved so far and what the next steps should be. In addition to working strategically with the board and the staff team, we also engaged volunteers, families and local stakeholders, who all spoke very highly of Home-Start Dover and the charity’s strengths. We know that charity people are busy people who tend to be spinning lots of plates at once, so our final report included a clear Action Plan of recommendations and priorities.
“Working with Steve on our Organisation Strengths Review has been an absolute pleasure. His report is professional, but also straight forward and easy to understand. I have full confidence in him, he’s consulted with me regularly, responds quickly and wasn’t adverse to being put on the spot or dealing with any potentially difficult findings.”
