British Council Beijing invited Steve Allman to meet with a delegation of Chinese social entrepreneurs this week and talk about disability and social enterprise in the UK. The 15 strong delegation have won funding and incubation support from the Social Investment Platform and were in London on a study tour to meet UK social entrepreneurs, funded by HSBC.
Steve presented an overview of key issues in the UK disability sector and shared his own experiences of working with disabled children and young people in the UK, both as a practitioner and as a chief executive of disability charity.
One of the delegates, Mr Sun Yong, very kindly presented Steve with some bookmarks (pictured) which include paintings by children with autism. Mr Sun Yong runs Starcamp, a programme which helps children with autism and learning disabilities to acquire the skills to attend mainstream schools. Cathy Sheng, Project Manager at British Council Beijing, thanked Steve for his input:
“Thank you so much for spending the afternoon with the group. Your rich experiences in both disability and social enterprise operation, plus your openness and frankness really impressed the group, so thank you for making the time.”
